Total acidity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009708

The total amount of acid in a water sample, found by titrating with a strong base to a fixed endpoint, so it counts free hydrogen ions plus the acid held in weak acids and hydrolyzing metal ions. It measures base-neutralizing capacity, the opposite of alkalinity, which measures acid-neutralizing capacity. Results are given in microequivalents per liter or as milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate.
