Hydrogen ion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006320
A single proton (H+) that has been stripped of its electron, which in aqueous atmospheric systems like cloud droplets or raindrops exists as the hydronium ion (H3O+). The concentration of hydrogen ions determines the acidity of a solution, measured on the pH scale. Unpolluted rainwater has a slightly acidic pH of about 5.6 due to dissolved carbon dioxide, while acid rain, containing strong acids from pollution, has a pH below this value.
