Free acidity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010513

The concentration of dissociated hydrogen ions (H+) present in an aqueous solution, such as precipitation or cloud water. It directly determines the solution's pH and represents the immediately available acidity, as opposed to total acidity which also includes undissociated weak acids. Free acidity is measured potentiometrically with a pH electrode and is a primary indicator of acid deposition's direct environmental impact.
