A measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, defined as the negative base-10 logarithm of the hydrogen ion activity. A pH value of 7 indicates neutrality, while values below 7 are acidic and values above 7 are alkaline. The pH of natural rainwater is typically slightly acidic, around 5.6, due to dissolved carbon dioxide.
