Free radical
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005756
An atom, molecule, or ion that has an unpaired valence electron, making it highly reactive. In the atmosphere, free radicals like hydroxyl (OH) and hydroperoxyl (HO2) are formed through photochemical reactions involving sunlight and trace gases. These species initiate and propagate many atmospheric chemical reactions, influencing air quality and climate.
