Chlorine monoxide dimer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004283
A molecule formed by the reversible dimerization of two chlorine monoxide (ClO) radicals, typically denoted as ClOOCl. This compound serves as a temporary reservoir for stratospheric chlorine, particularly at low temperatures in the polar regions. Its photolysis by ultraviolet radiation releases atomic chlorine, which then catalyzes ozone destruction.
