Chlorine oxides

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004286

A family of reactive chemical compounds consisting of chlorine and oxygen atoms, such as chlorine monoxide (ClO), chlorine dioxide (OClO), and dichlorine peroxide (Cl2O2). These species are key intermediates in the catalytic cycles that destroy stratospheric ozone, with ClO being a direct product of the reaction between a chlorine atom and an ozone molecule. The concentration of these oxides increases dramatically within the polar vortex during winter and spring, leading to the formation of the ozone hole.
