Chlorine nitrate
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004285
A chemical compound with the formula ClONO2, formed in the stratosphere from the reaction of chlorine monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. It acts as a temporary reservoir for reactive chlorine, sequestering it in a less reactive form. However, it can react on polar stratospheric clouds to release active chlorine, contributing to ozone depletion.
