Reservoir compounds
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008522
Atmospheric chemical species that temporarily store reactive atoms or radicals, releasing them later to participate in chemical reactions. These compounds often have lower reactivity or solubility than the species they store, allowing for transport over longer distances. Examples include chlorine nitrate (ClONO2) and dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) in stratospheric chemistry.
