Dinitrogen pentoxide
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005025
A reactive nitrogen oxide, N2O5, that serves as a reservoir for nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the troposphere, especially during the night. It forms from the reaction of nitrogen dioxide with the nitrate radical and exists in thermal equilibrium with these precursors. Through heterogeneous hydrolysis on the surface of aerosols, dinitrogen pentoxide is converted to nitric acid, providing a pathway for the removal of NOx from the atmosphere.
