Nitrate

A polyatomic anion composed of one nitrogen atom and three oxygen atoms, carrying a negative charge. It forms in the atmosphere through the oxidation of nitrogen oxides and is a component of atmospheric aerosols and precipitation. Nitrate is a major nutrient for plant growth and can contribute to eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems.
