Nitric acid trihydrate

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007545

A crystalline compound with the chemical formula HNO3·3H2O, formed at very low temperatures in the polar stratosphere. These crystals are a primary constituent of polar stratospheric clouds, which provide surfaces for heterogeneous chemical reactions. These reactions convert inactive chlorine reservoir species into ozone-depleting forms, contributing to the formation of the ozone hole.
