Catalytic cycles

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004196

A sequence of chemical reactions where a catalyst is consumed in one step and regenerated in a subsequent step, allowing it to participate repeatedly in the overall reaction without being permanently altered. In the atmosphere, these cycles are responsible for the destruction of ozone by substances like chlorine and bromine radicals. One chlorine atom can destroy thousands of ozone molecules before being removed from the stratosphere.
