Catalytic converters
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004195
Devices installed in vehicle exhaust systems that reduce the toxicity of emissions by converting harmful pollutants into less harmful substances. They use catalysts, such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium, to facilitate chemical reactions that transform carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and unburnt hydrocarbons. These converters are a primary means of controlling air pollution from automobiles.
