Washout

An enlargement of the wellbore diameter beyond the size of the drill bit, caused by erosion from the drilling fluid or by unstable formation characteristics. Washouts can lead to poor cement jobs, difficulties in running casing, and inaccurate log readings. They are often detected by caliper logs.
