Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009061
A location, area, or process that releases a substance, such as a pollutant or greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. Sources can be natural, like volcanoes emitting sulfur dioxide, or anthropogenic, such as industrial facilities releasing carbon dioxide. The rate of release from a source is quantified as its emission rate or source strength, which is a key input for air quality and climate models.
