Heterodyne

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006230

A technique used in remote sensing and signal processing to shift the frequency of a signal to a different, usually lower, frequency for easier amplification and analysis. This process involves mixing the incoming signal with a locally generated reference signal, producing sum and difference frequencies. In atmospheric science, it is employed in lidar and radar systems to detect and measure atmospheric properties like wind speed and aerosol concentrations.
