Receiver gain

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008438

A measure of the amplification applied to a signal received by an instrument, such as a weather radar or satellite radiometer, before it is processed. Adjusting the gain increases the strength of the incoming signal, making it easier to detect weak returns from distant or small targets. Receiver gain is expressed in decibels (dB) and is calibrated to relate the received power to the physical properties of the target, such as radar reflectivity.
