Sensitivity time control

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008800

An electronic function in a weather radar receiver that automatically reduces its sensitivity for echoes received from nearby targets. Because the radar beam spreads with distance, it can be completely filled by precipitation close to the radar but only partially filled by the same precipitation farther away. Sensitivity Time Control (STC) compensates for this effect by attenuating the power of close-range returns, preventing them from being overestimated relative to distant ones.
