Pressure broadening

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009409

The widening of spectral lines in absorption or emission spectroscopy due to collisions between the radiating atoms or molecules and other particles in the gas phase. These collisions perturb the energy levels of the species, leading to a distribution of transition frequencies. The extent of broadening increases with higher gas pressure.
