Magnetic mud
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002254
A drilling fluid that carries enough magnetic material, such as magnetite, iron-rich weighting agents or steel fines, to disturb magnetic measurements. It distorts the quadrature signal of induction tools and corrupts compass-based surveys of the well path made by MWD tools, so it is a nuisance to be corrected for, not a deliberate design. Invasion of the mud into the formation extends the affected zone around the borehole.
