Charge-transfer state
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001920
An excited electronic state accessed from the ground state through a charge-transfer transition, in which a substantial amount of electron density has moved from a donor part to an acceptor part of a molecule or complex. It has a large dipole moment, so polar solvents stabilize it and shift its emission to lower energy, whereas locally excited states depend much less on the solvent. Whether it lies below or above the locally excited states depends on the solvent and the donor-acceptor pair.
