Intramolecular charge transfer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013208

The redistribution of electron density within a single molecule, typically from an electron-donating group to an electron-accepting group, upon excitation by light. This process leads to a change in the dipole moment of the molecule in its excited state compared to its ground state. Intramolecular charge transfer is a fundamental process in many organic chromophores and fluorescent probes.
