Cough
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002621
A reflex action in fish characterized by a rapid and forceful reversal of water flow across the gills. This behavior serves to clear the gill surfaces of irritants, including suspended solids, parasites, or chemical pollutants present in the water. The frequency of this gill-clearing action is a measurable, sublethal response used in ecotoxicology as an indicator of water quality and the presence of toxic substances.
