Tau protein
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011827
A microtubule-associated protein primarily found in neurons, where it stabilizes microtubules and regulates axonal transport. Hyperphosphorylation of this protein leads to its aggregation into neurofibrillary tangles, a hallmark pathology of Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies. The degree of tau phosphorylation and aggregation correlates with disease progression.
