Alpha-synuclein
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000449
A small, soluble protein found abundantly in the brain, particularly in presynaptic terminals. Its precise physiological function is not fully understood, but it is implicated in synaptic plasticity and neurotransmitter release. Aggregation of alpha-synuclein into insoluble fibrils forms Lewy bodies, a hallmark of Parkinson's disease and other synucleinopathies.
