Epidermis

The outermost layer of the skin, forming a protective barrier against the external environment. It is composed primarily of keratinocytes, which undergo differentiation as they move from the basal layer to the surface. This stratified squamous epithelium lacks blood vessels and relies on diffusion for nutrient supply.
