Epidemiology

The branch of medical science that studies the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. It involves the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data to identify risk factors and inform public health interventions. Epidemiological studies can be observational or experimental in design.
