Sertoli cell
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010775
A type of somatic cell located within the seminiferous tubules of the testis that provides structural and metabolic support to developing sperm cells. Sertoli cells are responsible for nourishing germ cells, phagocytizing residual cytoplasm during spermiogenesis, and forming the blood-testis barrier. This barrier, formed by tight junctions between adjacent Sertoli cells, isolates developing sperm from the bloodstream and immune system.
