Syncytium

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011754

A multinucleated cell that results from the fusion of multiple individual cells or from multiple nuclear divisions without cytokinesis. This cellular arrangement allows for coordinated function across a larger volume, as seen in skeletal muscle fibers or the syncytiotrophoblast. Cardiac muscle cells are functionally, though not structurally, syncytial.
