Umbilical artery
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012406
A pair of arteries present in the fetus that carry deoxygenated blood and waste products from the fetal circulation to the placenta. These arteries originate from the internal iliac arteries and travel through the umbilical cord. After birth, the umbilical arteries constrict and eventually become ligaments, no longer functioning in blood transport.
