Umbilical cord
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012407
A flexible, tube-like structure that connects a developing fetus to the placenta, facilitating the exchange of nutrients, oxygen, and waste products between the mother and the fetus. It contains two umbilical arteries, one umbilical vein, and Wharton's jelly, which protects the vessels. The cord is typically cut shortly after birth, leaving a stump that eventually forms the umbilicus.
