Brainstem

The stalk-like region at the base of the brain that merges into the spinal cord and contains the centres controlling breathing, heart rate, sleep and consciousness. It is made up of the midbrain, the pons and the medulla oblongata, and nerve tracts linking the cerebrum and cerebellum with the spinal cord run through it. Ten of the twelve pairs of cranial nerves, numbers III to XII, emerge from it.
