Thalamus

A large, ovoid mass of grey matter located in the dorsal part of the diencephalon, deep within the brain. It acts as a relay station for sensory information, transmitting signals from the spinal cord and brainstem to the cerebral cortex. The thalamus also participates in motor control, consciousness, sleep, and alertness.
