Thalidomide
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011919
A synthetic drug that gained notoriety in the late 1950s and early 1960s for causing severe birth defects, particularly phocomelia, when taken by pregnant women. It was originally marketed as a sedative and antiemetic. Despite its teratogenic effects, it has found renewed use in treating certain conditions like multiple myeloma and leprosy due to its immunomodulatory and anti-angiogenic properties.
