Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011866

A chemical, physical, or biological agent that can cause structural or functional abnormalities in an embryo or fetus following exposure of the pregnant female. The effects are dependent on the timing of exposure during gestation, with the first trimester being a period of high susceptibility for major structural defects. Examples of teratogenic agents include thalidomide, alcohol, and certain viral infections like rubella.
