Critical period

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002697

A specific, limited time window during development when an organism is highly susceptible to external influences, such as exposure to a toxicant, which can lead to permanent structural or functional changes. Exposure outside this window may result in different or no adverse effects. For instance, the first trimester of human pregnancy is a critical period for many developmental toxicants.
