Critical organ

The specific organ or tissue in the body that first shows adverse effects from exposure to a toxic substance, or the organ that exhibits the most severe effects at a given dose. This organ is considered the most sensitive target for a particular toxicant. For example, the liver is a common critical organ for many orally ingested toxins.
