Morphogen

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007579

A signaling molecule that emanates from a localized source and forms a concentration gradient across a developing tissue. Cells respond to different concentrations of this molecule by activating specific gene expression programs, leading to distinct cell fates and patterns. Retinoic acid is a well-known morphogen in vertebrate development.
