Retinoic acid

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010298

A metabolite of vitamin A that functions as a signaling molecule in vertebrate development and cell differentiation. It binds to nuclear receptors called retinoic acid receptors (RARs), which then act as transcription factors to regulate the expression of specific genes, including homeobox genes. Excess exposure to retinoic acid or its analogues during pregnancy can be teratogenic, causing severe birth defects.
