Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005345

A specific DNA sequence, approximately 180 base pairs long, found within genes that regulate anatomical development (morphogenesis) in animals, fungi, and plants. This sequence encodes a protein domain called the homeodomain, which binds to DNA and functions as a transcription factor to switch other genes on or off. The high degree of conservation of the homeobox sequence across widely divergent species, from insects to humans, points to its ancient origin and conserved function in organizing body plans during embryonic development.
