Bone morphogenetic protein-4

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001433

A specific protein within the bone morphogenetic protein family that acts as a signaling molecule in embryonic development. It establishes ventral cell fates in the early embryo by acting as a ventralizing morphogen. Its activity is antagonized by dorsalizing factors, such as chordin and noggin, which are secreted by the Spemann-Mangold organizer, thereby creating a concentration gradient that patterns the dorsal-ventral axis.
