Sonic hedgehog
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011050
A secreted protein that functions as a morphogen, a signaling molecule that directs the development of different cell types based on its concentration gradient. In vertebrate embryos, it is instrumental in patterning the central nervous system, particularly the neural tube, and is also involved in the formation of limbs, digits, and other structures. The protein is a member of the hedgehog signaling pathway, and mutations in its gene can lead to severe developmental abnormalities, including holoprosencephaly.
