SOMO
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011049
An acronym for Singly Occupied Molecular Orbital, which is a molecular orbital containing a single unpaired electron. This type of orbital is characteristic of radical species and defines their frontier orbital reactivity, acting as both an electron donor and an electron acceptor. The SOMO lies energetically between the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) of a reduced species and the Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) of an oxidized species in a related redox system.
