Ambiphilic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000475
Describing a chemical species that exhibits both electrophilic and nucleophilic character simultaneously, allowing it to react as either an electron acceptor or an electron donor. Such species possess both a low-lying unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and a high-lying occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) that can participate in bonding. For example, some carbenes can act as both electrophiles and nucleophiles.
