Lowest unoccupied molecular orbital

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006790

The molecular orbital with the lowest energy that is not occupied by an electron in the ground state of a molecule, ion, or radical. In the context of polymers, the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is related to the electron affinity of the material. The energy difference between the LUMO and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) is the HOMO-LUMO gap, a key parameter in electronic properties.
