Subjacent orbital

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011516

A molecular orbital next to the frontier orbitals, namely the next-to-highest occupied orbital (NHOMO) just below the HOMO and the second-lowest unoccupied orbital (SLUMO) just above the LUMO. Subjacent orbitals matter in frontier orbital analysis of molecular interactions when the HOMO or LUMO alone does not explain the observed reactivity or selectivity. In a molecule with a closely spaced NHOMO and HOMO, both must be considered.
