Somite

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013571

One of a series of segmented blocks of mesoderm that form along the neural tube of vertebrate embryos. These transient structures give rise to the vertebrae, ribs, skeletal muscles, and dermis of the skin. The number and arrangement of somites are characteristic for each vertebrate species and are used as developmental staging markers.
