Pronephros
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009542
The earliest and most primitive kidney structure that develops in vertebrate embryos. It is a transient organ, functional in some fish and amphibian larvae, but in higher vertebrates, it degenerates and is replaced by the mesonephros and later the metanephros. This structure forms from intermediate mesoderm in the cervical region of the embryo.
