Paraxial mesoderm

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008463

The region of the mesoderm in a developing embryo that is situated alongside the neural tube. During neurulation, this tissue organizes into segmented blocks known as somites. These somites differentiate to form the axial skeleton, including vertebrae and ribs, as well as skeletal muscle and the dermis of the back, with the number of somites used to determine the developmental stage of an embryo.
